Del Piero: Juventus need more than couple of signings

Juventus captain Alessandro del Piero says they won't transform into sudden title contenders with a couple of major signings.

“It's not as simple as just bringing in two or three champions,” Del Piero explained to Tuttosport.

“There are lots of other factors involved. For example, we played several games at night in the winter this season.

“On these evenings it was very cold or humid, which didn't help and then there were the refereeing errors that influenced results.

“But it was our fault because defensive and attacking mistakes stopped us achieving what we could have. We need to put that right because I don't want to finish second or third again.

“As far as transfers are concerned I have never vetoed any swoop,” Alex continued.

“The reason for that is very simple. I don't talk to the club about the transfer market and they don't ask for my opinion.”

Anelka claims Chelsea a bigger club than Arsenal

Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka has revealed how he believes the Blues are a bigger club than Arsenal.

The Frenchman spent time with the Gunners when he first arrived in England in 1997 and thinks that Chelsea has a much bigger status than his former club, likening them with Real Madrid.

“Chelsea is a mega club composed of top players, within which you have to win every game because you are put under massive pressure,” Anelka told Les Dessous du Sport.

“You have to win week in, week out, which is not the case when you play for Bolton, where you know that you are not going to finish in Champions League places every season.

“At Chelsea, you do not try [to win], you have to [win], which is very hard.

“It is different from at Arsenal. There is a context surrounding the club because of the chairman [Roman Abramovich] that makes people speak about Chelsea, more than about Arsenal.

“Arsenal are composed of young players, playing for third or fourth place, but we do not really speak about them for the title.

“But Chelsea is like Real Madrid. The pressure is huge.

Wenger advises Chelsea: Employ Hiddink permanently

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger feels Chelsea will not see the best of their interim boss Guus Hiddink unless they make his stay permanent.

"I feel that he is an experienced manager and he has given them what he knows about the game – belief, strength," Wenger said to the club's official website ahead of the Gunners FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea.

"It is always difficult to assess on a short period of time. I believe if Hiddink stays for five years at Chelsea, he can certainly print his own way he sees the game into the club. On a short term, you try to have an impact but only on little things because you have to stay a longer period if you want to get your ways into the club.

"I rate him highly. When you come to his age and have survived in top level competition, you have quality.

"He is a very successful manager. But we want to express our strengths (on Saturday) and not concentrate on those of an opponent."

Juventus president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli insists there was nothing untoward in a meeting with Marcello Lippi last week.

He explained: "I knew very well that there was this meeting between our most important and strategic operations manager and one of the most important men of Italian football.

Zola disagrees with Redknapp's assessment of West Ham youngsters

West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola has told Hammers starlets they can reach the same heights as Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard, contrary to Harry Redknapp's recent comments.

The current Tottenham boss, Harry Redknapp, claimed last week that the current crop of Hammers talent is nowhere near the same calibre as the former stars.

But Zola has told the likes of Mark Noble, Freddie Sears and James Tomkins they can emulate the exploits of their predecessors.

"I believe when Rio or Lamps or Joe Cole were coming through they were just promising. Then they improved," the Italian said.

"What I said about my players is that it is just down to them. If they work hard every day and keep the right attitude they can do that.

"Maybe Harry has more experience than me and can see forward more than me. But I believe everyone owns their own destiny.

"When I started playing football there were a few that said I wouldn't become the player I was but they didn't know what my attitude and mentality was.

"I believe that if my players have the attitude they can become important players.

"If they push themselves hard and believe in what they do they will go beyond the limits that people are putting on them now."
